Produced for only a relatively short period between approximately 1983 and 1986, the reference DD145.0022 features the familiar 42mm asymmetrical Speedmaster Professional case crafted from stainless steel, complemented by a solid 14k yellow gold tachymeter bezel. Beneath the Hesalite crystal sits what is undoubtedly the defining feature of this reference: a striking matte gold dial paired with contrasting silver-grey chronograph registers. The result is a remarkably elegant interpretation of the Moonwatch, offering a completely different character from its all-steel counterparts while remaining unmistakably a Speedmaster Professional.

Although the DD145.0022 was never produced as a numbered or limited edition, examples rarely appear on the market. Omega has never publicly disclosed production figures, but the reference is generally considered one of the scarcer members of the Speedmaster Professional family. Its combination of precious metal accents, short production run and distinctive dial configuration has made it increasingly desirable among collectors seeking something beyond the traditional Moonwatch.

Originally, this reference was delivered on Omega's steel and gold reference 1171 bracelet. Unfortunately, the original bracelet of this particular watch did not survive nearly four decades of regular use by its first owner. To complement the tones of the gold dial and bezel, we have therefore fitted the watch to one of our handcrafted Epsom leather straps, creating a look that feels both period-correct and contemporary.

Powering the watch is Omega's trusted Caliber 861, the legendary manual-winding chronograph movement derived from the equally celebrated Lemania 1873 architecture. Renowned for its reliability, robustness and historical significance, the Caliber 861 served as the backbone of the Speedmaster Professional line for decades and remains highly respected today.

Adding further character to this Speedmaster is its unique provenance. The watch was originally purchased by the managing director of a Jaguar and Daimler dealership in the Dutch province of Friesland. After many years of ownership, he became enamoured with the appearance of the newly introduced sapphire display case-backs that Omega offered on certain Speedmaster models. Wanting to admire the movement of his own watch in the same way, he asked his authorised Omega retailer whether such a modification could be made. The retailer subsequently replaced the original stainless steel case-back with an Omega sapphire display case-back, creating a highly unusual configuration that remains with the watch today.

While enthusiasts may have differing opinions on modifications, there is no denying that the display back offers a fascinating view of the legendary Caliber 861 and gives this already uncommon Speedmaster an even more distinctive personality.
