Few vintage dive watches have achieved the legendary status of the Omega Seamaster 300. Among collectors, however, there is one version that stands above the rest: the reference 166.024 "Big Triangle".

Produced during the late 1960s, the Big Triangle owes its nickname to the oversized luminous triangle positioned at 12 o'clock. Originally developed for military-specification Seamaster 300 models supplied to the British Ministry of Defence, the distinctive dial design eventually found its way onto a small number of civilian examples. Today, it remains one of the most desirable dial variations within the entire Seamaster 300 lineage.

The 41mm stainless steel case wears remarkably modern by today's standards, while the black dial offers outstanding legibility thanks to its bold luminous hour plots, broad 'Sword' hands, and highly distinctive oversized triangle at 12 o'clock. Together, these elements create one of the most purposeful and attractive dive watch designs ever produced by Omega.


Even more impressive is the fact that all Tritium luminous material remains completely original throughout. Not only has it developed the warm and attractive patina that collectors love, but this particular example features Tritium mixed with Zinc Sulfide, a luminous compound known for ageing exceptionally well. Unlike many vintage watches whose lume has long since lost its responsiveness, the Zinc Sulfide compound on this Seamaster 300 remains remarkably active. After exposure to sunlight, it still emits a surprisingly strong glow, while under UV light the lume comes alive in spectacular fashion. It is a wonderful reminder of the watch's originality and a characteristic that is becoming increasingly difficult to find on untouched examples today.

What makes this particular watch especially attractive is the presence of its original Omega reference 1039 bracelet fitted with the correct 516 end links. While many Seamaster 300s have long since lost their original bracelet, finding a period-correct 1039 today has become increasingly difficult. Produced between approximately 1966 and the early 1970s, the 1039 is instantly recognisable by its lightweight construction and spring-loaded expanding links, offering a level of comfort that modern bracelets rarely achieve. The correct 516 end links were specifically designed for the 20mm lug width of the Seamaster 300 and are considered the proper configuration for the reference.


For many collectors, the bracelet is every bit as important as the watch itself. An original 1039 with matching 516 end links significantly enhances both the collectability and historical integrity of a Seamaster 300 from this period. Finding the watch and bracelet together, as Omega intended nearly sixty years ago, has become increasingly uncommon.

Today, the Omega Seamaster 300 Big Triangle is widely regarded as one of the most important vintage dive watches ever produced. Its military-inspired design, exceptional wearing comfort, and unmistakable character have secured its place among the icons of vintage horology.
