Universal Geneve Uni-Compax Tachymeter
‘What a fantastic little chronograph’ were my first thoughts when I laid eyes on this Universal Geneve Uni-Compax from the 1960’s. Not only is this the second largest size (35mm) within the UG reference line for Uni-Compax watches, she also remains in excellent and all original condition. Also, once on the wrist this 35mm Chronograph is not so ‘little’ anymore. Instead, this Universal Geneve Uni-Compax Tachymeter becomes a very impressive chronograph measured in a delicate size from times when watch research and development was very interesting to say the least – There is a reason the 1960’s are often referred to as the Golden Age of Watch Design.
Baer with me: The well balanced off-white dial is finished with a clear coating that can only be described as a soft glaze and features Arabic style 12 and 6 relief hour-markers. The remaining eight indices are short, chunky relief bars, all filled with tritium which now evenly shows a fabulous and very attractive yellow patina. The original Dauphine hands show some marks from watchmaking tools, but are still in a good condition and show a somewhat lighter tone of Tritium patina when compared to the indices. Also notice the beautiful, hand-blued hands for the sub-dials and the chronograph counter hand – understand that this ‘blueing’ of the hands is a true craftsmanship and was all done by hand back in those days. The black graphics on the dial are combined with a blue colored Tachymeter scale, located on the outer edge of the dial and based in a 1000 units – This subtle color combination gives an extra depth to the dial and will make it easier to read the Chronograph should you feel the need to measure some elapsed time. All numbers on, and inside the watch are clearly visible to the naked eye, and both pushers as well as the original ”U” branded winding crown are original to the watch. As with all UG watches it is very important for these aforementioned numbers to be sharp and crisp as often these were polished out over the period of 50+ years. Look close and you will see all numerals meet the desired condition – This Universal Geneve Uni-Compax Tachymeter remains in a true collectors condition and is a whole lotta bang for your buck!
Inside the case ticks caliber 281, this beautiful column-wheel movement was serviced by our watchmakers and we fitted the watch to a fresh suede strap matching the patina inside the hour-markers. This Universal Geneve Uni-Compax Tachymeter will be sold with our 24 month warranty.
