Tank Louis ‘Extra Plate’

Designed by Louis Cartier in 1917, the Tank series drew inspiration from the Renault FT-17 tank, resulting in a design that has become an enduring symbol of classic design. Our Tank model, which dates back to ca. 1975, features the traditional 24 x 29 mm rectangular case, made from 18k yellow gold – The white enamel dial, with Cartiers iconic black Roman numerals, expresses an elegant aesthetic for both the gentleman, as well as the lady Cartier collector.

This Tank Louis ‘Extra Plate’ its most intricate feature is most likely the magnificent F. Piguet movement – this manual-winding movement – a caliber 21, is an Extra Plate or Ultra-Thin manual wound movement which was originally introduced in 1925. The F. Piguet, caliber 21 has a height of just 1.73mm, making it still one of the thinnest movements ever made. Watches featuring the caliber 21 are considered among the most elegant and chic timepieces from the previous century. Another notable feature of this Tank watch is the “Swiss” printed signature on the enamel dial, as well as the pointy A in the Cartier brand name, but also the lack of Cartier’s so-called ‘secret signature’ at the 7 o’clock position is something special. These details tell us that we are dealing with a so-called MK2 dial, and MK2 Cartier Tank Louis. In the 1970s, Cartier had just three boutiques worldwide: Paris, London, and New York. The “Swiss” signature at the bottom of the dial, indicates that this Tank Louis was supplied by the New York boutique at that time – One can dream and imagine that this vintage Tank was once owned by one of New York’s iconic figures, such as Andy Warhol, Muhammad Ali, and Jackie Kennedy whom all were known for wearing the classic Cartier Tank Louis.

This vintage Tank Louis ‘Extra Plate’ is worn on a vintage LeRoy handmade bracelet and closes around your wrist using the original, 18k vintage Cartier “C” shaped pin-buckle. The Tank received a full service at one of Cartier’s Service Centers, but due to the watch it’s overall condition and rare appearance, we decided to keep the case and case-back unpolished. She will be sold with our extensive two year warranty.
