1603 Datejust ‘Blue Denim’

The color blue holds a special place in the world of watch dials. Within Rolex’s lineup, it’s one of the most elusive dial colors to source, especially for vintage pieces. Early pie-pan dials with rich blue finishes have been out of production for decades, making original examples increasingly rare and highly desirable. That’s why we’re particularly excited to offer this stunning blue-dial Rolex Datejust, complete with beautifully aged, custard-colored Tritium.

This example is a reference 1603 from 1978, fitted with its stainless steel engine-turned bezel and accompanied by its original folded Jubilee bracelet. The Denim Blue dial is enriched by a refined non-sunburst texture, more of a matte finish if you will, that comes alive in the light. For optimal readability, the dial features ten sharply machined stick indices, each cut with precise 90-degree angles into a subtle “U” shape. These facets catch and reflect light in a jewel-like manner, it’s one of those small but unmistakably 1970s Rolex details that elevate the watch’s presence on the wrist. The case is in excellent overall condition, with all four lugs matching in size, shape, and thickness. The engine-turned bezel remains unpolished and retains its original character. The watch is paired with its original 6251 folded Jubilee bracelet, which shows some stretch, as expected for its age, but remains in honest and very wearable condition. The Rolex coronet on the Oysterclasp is still clear and well-defined. Still, the true highlight of this 1603 is the warm Denim Blue dial and its wonderfully contrasting patina. The Tritium plots have aged into a rich, dark yellow tone that is even and attractive across the dial, perfectly matching the patinated Tritium within the hands. This harmonious aging gives the watch its unmistakable vintage charm and sets it apart from more ‘ordinary’ examples.
