The Datejust, created in 1945, revolutionized wristwatches by automatically changing the date at midnight. The reference 1601, manufactured in the 1970’s in the design we see here, built on this history with notable style elements like the classic pie-pan dial; the larger matte black Roman numerals on this specific 1601 further accentuate this distinctive vintage Rolex characteristic, that visually draws the dial towards the flange and minute track, creating an appealing sense of depth.

So, this particular example features the coveted ‘Buckley’ dial, a term coined by and named after vintage watch dealer and collector, John Buckley. Known for its matte finish and matte Roman numerals, the Buckley dial showcases an aesthetic that truly stands out among its counterparts.
