1803 ‘Havana Ghost’ Day-Date
This 1803 Rolex Day-Date with an exquisite beige ‘Havana’ dial also has some ‘Ghost’ characteristics, as the soft white printed text ‘disappears’ when the watch is viewed from certain angles; enough reason to add the nickname Ghost to this already exciting Havana dial, and what an incredibly cool vintage Day-Date this is. The dial has a lovely soft beige tone accented with 18k yellow gold Baton indices – The hands are also manufactured from 18k yellow gold, and the most interesting aspect on this dial is perhaps how the Tritium dots affected the top layer of the dial, generating a lighter-colored ‘orb’ surrounding the Tritium that appears to shine due to the contrast and color difference. These effects of the aged Tritium and its engagement with the dial paint, is often called ‘fried egg patina’ (for obvious reasons, I would say).
The center-case on this 1803 ‘Havana Ghost’ Day-Date is in excellent condition, with sharp and well maintained lugs and a somewhat more vivid glow to the yellow gold, all due to the way 18k gold was composed back in the 1970s. The slightly increased amount of copper gives these vintage Day-Dates a lovely, somewhat darker glow, which adds to the watch’s attractiveness and appeal. This Day-Date is worn on our 20mm Alcantara Sandstone strap, which secures around your wrist using a vintage, 18k gold Rolex pin-buckle. We think this Sandstone strap looks great with the dial, the entire watch and that warmer yellow gold, but if you want another color strap, that’s fine of course; we have plenty of options. The fluted yellow gold bezel is still pretty crisp with sharp lines all around, and all gold hallmark stamps are clearly visible to the naked eye – Overall, this is a stunning vintage day-date which you really need to see for yourself as photos don’t do this piece justice. Therefor we’d like to invite you to our office for a private viewing while enjoying a strong espresso.
